The suspension is one of the most important elements of a car's suspension: it absorbs energy from the wheels and also gives the chassis elasticity when the car starts to move. It's worth noting that the spring does not absorb vibrations - that's what a damper is used for. 

If you frequently drive on bad roads, it is the components of the suspension system that will suffer the most damage: the springs and shock absorbers take the brunt of the load. These components should therefore be systematically checked.

   

Design features

The design of the spring is not at all complicated - it is open, with no hidden nodes or mechanisms. When a car owner is considering which spring is suitable for his vehicle, it is important to pay attention to the following points

- what characteristics and parameters the cable has;

- how many windings there are in one section, how dense they are;

- what length.

Based on these parameters, you can choose exactly the right part to perfectly match the suspension of your specific car.

What criteria should be used when selecting springs:

1. Based on linear parameters: where the load force resisted by the suspension element is proportional to the deformation it has to resist. This criterion is very clear and is often used.

2. Considering progressive performance: in this case, the load force applied to this suspension element must be taken into account, which increases progressively. Therefore, the thickness, density and diameter of the windings must be taken into account in the choice of the component.

3. Based on digressive values: when the load forces experienced by the component are mixed.

   

Purpose of a component, such as a spring, and how it works

It is well known that dampers and springs are interlinked because they complement each other: they enable the car to move smoothly regardless of the roughness of the road and can improve the machine's handling. The spring is an integral part of the vehicle's suspension system, as it is the elastic part that first absorbs and softens the shocks and jolts that occur during driving.

If the vehicle wheel strikes the road surface, the spring must return it to its original position as quickly as possible. If this part is soft, it can be compressed firmly and the spring will absorb more of the impact energy. The impact energy of the wheel can be dissipated quite slowly and the vibrations generated can maintain their intensity over a long period of time, as they can be further "fed" by new impacts of the wheels on the road surface. To overcome this problem, dampers are used in combination with springs to damp vibrations.

The necessity of using springs in a suspension system stems from the fact that they are able to dissipate or distribute the impact energy on the pavement as the vehicle wheels move. This dissipation is necessary in order to distribute the mechanical impact on the vehicle wheels.

    

Why might this part lose its characteristics?

A number of conditions can affect the loss of spring performance:

- the presence of natural wear or "fatigue" of the metal from which the suspension element is made;

- if the surface layer is damaged because this part has to withstand excessive load and constant mechanical stress;

- corrosion has set in: rust on the metal causes it to become brittle and deteriorate;

- if the part is systematically overloaded;

- if the driver frequently drives his vehicle on rough roads without slowing down.

    

The spring must be replaced

If this suspension element needs to be replaced:

- If the part is broken: usually one of the end coils breaks;

- If you see signs of corrosion;

- If the metal from which the part is made is damaged: this is often visible;

- If the part has been damaged, it may be damaged by: (a) the part is damaged, if the part has been damaged, it may show signs of damage: - if the part has been damaged, the clearance of the vehicle is reduced;

- if an uneven level is observed: the front and rear of the vehicle are not at the same height.

If the diagnosis shows that the springs are in good condition, it is advisable to change them from one axle to the other in order to avoid imbalances in the suspension.
