Brake pad

Active filters

Brake pads are one part of the braking system. They provide braking acceleration through friction on the disc, converting the resulting force into braking torque. This design is as important as the suspension system or the engine. They cannot be common to all classes of vehicles.

Use of brake pads in cars

Braking is an active process in which speed is reduced by the braking system. There are two types of brake pads:

1. When the brake is applied, the discs generate pressure which is transmitted through the system to the brake cylinder. The components then come into contact with the disc through the friction plates, converting the frictional force into thermal energy that causes the vehicle to brake. These types of pads are used in medium-priced vehicles.

2 Drum pads apply pressure to the inside of the pad walls. Brake pressure is generated by depressing the brake pedal, forcing fluid into the brake pads, which move the pads apart and activate them. These brakes are usually fitted to low-cost cars.

Types of brake pads

Brake pads are a solid metal disc with a friction-coated part in contact with the discs. Their size and construction may vary, but not their function. The main product types are as follows:

1. Semi-metallic - composed of steel fibres. The advantages are relatively high reliability, the disadvantage is rapid wear of the brake discs.

2. Low metal content - more organic than steel. The difference is durability and little negative impact on discs.

3. Ceramic - designed for above average sports cars. They are durable and efficient. Not suitable for everyday use.

4. organic is the newest type. They consist of a mixture of carbon containing materials without steel.

In addition to the base and lining, the part contains a structure:

- Fasteners to prevent the cushion from changing position;

- A vibration damping plate that reduces noise when the vehicle is stationary.

- A wear sensor;

How often should replacement be done

The answer may depend on the category of vehicle. Mid-size vehicles usually have special wear sensors that warn you when it's time to replace the upholstery. In budget cars, this is reflected in the colourful brake noise and steering vibration.

Each mechanism has a specific lifespan. It is recommended to check the condition of the cushions twice a year. They can fail for external reasons and in several specific cases. External causes may include driving habits, vehicle use and cumulative weight during transport.

Special cases:

1. Extreme temperature fluctuations.

2. Cushion crumbling.

3. uneven wear of brake pads due to brake mechanism failure.

How to choose the right ones and what to look for?

All brake pads can be divided into several categories:

1. They are original equipment fitted at the time of assembly and are included in the price of the vehicle.

2. are manufactured for the wider automotive market. These are the equivalent of those found elsewhere in specialist shops. The cost may be lower than the original because there is no cover, but the quality can be many times better because they are produced in large quantities.

3. Supplied to less developed countries. They are characterised by a total lack of certification and a very low price.

This part of the braking system is best installed in your car at a service centre. However, if you want to do it yourself, you will have to find out the original factory block number and select the appropriate analogue number. Please note that if you choose the cheapest option, you may get poor quality. Also, all brake system components should be selected according to your driving style.

Conclusions

Brake pads are a very important part of a vehicle's braking system. They are constantly being updated with new models with improved features. Any failure can cause accidents, so it is advisable to follow the operating rules and have the brake system regularly checked by a workshop. A wide range of brake pads are available today, with varying prices and quality. On our website you will find the model that best suits your needs, with up-to-date prices, in our dedicated section.
